AFTRHRS · Community safety
Behind every profile is a person. We request identity verification in our members’ best interests — to help protect our community and make AFTRHRS a safer, more accountable place to connect.
Recent South African reporting on murders and attacks, and their possible links to criminals described in the media as “Grindr gangs”, is a serious reminder that people seeking connection can be targeted. On 20 October 2026, Daily Maverick reported on Steven Gruzd’s murder and a possible dating-app connection. That connection is not an established finding of guilt; the accused have pleaded not guilty. The reporting linked below provides context for these concerns.
We acknowledge the people whose lives have been lost, their loved ones, and survivors of violence. Responsibility lies with perpetrators — never with someone for using a dating app, seeking intimacy or trusting another person.
These concerns inform why we request ID verification. We do not want access to our community to rest on a profile photo and a self-declared age alone. Verification adds a checkpoint alongside human review, moderation, reporting and blocking.
Our manual review assesses identity and age evidence. AFTRHRS is strictly 18+, and submitting documents does not itself unlock protected features: approval is required.
A reviewed identity gives us more to assess than an unverified profile alone. It supports our safety process; concerns about identity, age or behaviour can lead to further review and restricted access.
ID verification is not a criminal-record check, an endorsement of a member, or a guarantee of anyone’s intentions. It cannot prevent every fake identity, scam or act of violence. No dating platform can promise complete safety, online or when meeting in person.
Meet somewhere public first, arrange your own transport and tell someone you trust about your plans. Respect your instincts and leave if you feel uncomfortable. Report concerning profiles or messages using the in-app tools; if you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
Identity documents contain sensitive personal information, and it is reasonable to ask why they are needed. Submit verification evidence only through the app’s verification process — never to another member in a chat. Read our Privacy Policy and contact us if you have questions about verification or your personal information.
The verification process may request images of the front and back of an accepted identity document, together with a selfie of you holding that document. This evidence supports a manual age and identity review.
Identity and age evidence is processed for verification, platform security, abuse prevention and legal compliance.
Access is limited to authorised personnel. Submissions are assessed by authorised reviewers, and the evidence is handled in accordance with applicable privacy law and our Privacy Policy. Never send ID documents to another member.
Our current policies do not set a fixed retention period. We keep information only as long as needed and use reasonable safeguards; where retention or deletion periods apply, they are governed by our actual data-handling practices and applicable law.
Yes. You may request access to, correction of or deletion of your information by contacting support@aftrhrs.co.za.
The sources below explain the wider safety context. AFTRHRS is not affiliated with Grindr or these publishers, and does not claim that verification would have prevented the incidents reported.
